PARTERRE, 2005

Reflective tape on Perspex panels
980 x 490 cm

'Parterre' was inspired in part by Kate's fascination for the apparently magical properties of reflective materials. This shimmering carpet, with its knitted surface (a playful reaction to the predominantly male, suited workers in the offices surrounding the gallery), has a life of its own; by the bright light of day it glimmers and glows but, as the light conditions change, so does it, sometimes 'quiet' and appearing to disappear into the floor, at other times hovering 'noisily' above the ground.
