Air-conditioning units keep China running. Each one contains remnants of the daily life and grind of its users - dirt, dust, hair, grease - while their incessant whirring is an aural reminder of a city that never sleeps. When placed together these machines - an architectural blight on China's buildings - possess a formal unity, conjuring beauty out of the unexpected.
